    The IBM 7212 Model 103 is an excellent choice for applications where:

    • The availability of server bays for storage devices is limited or not available (depending on server model)

    The two bays of the 7212 Model 103 can accommodate any two of the following for IBM System p servers:

    • DAT72 (DDS Gen5) Tape Drive
    • VXA-2 Tape Drive
    • VXA-320 Tape Drive
    • DVD-RAM 2 drive
    • SLR60 Tape Drive
    • SLR100 Tape Drive
    • Half-High LTO-2 Tape Drive

    The two bays of the 7212 Model 103 can accommodate any two of the following for IBM System i servers:

    • VXA-2 Tape Drive
    • VXA-320 Tape Drive
    • DVD-RAM 2 drive
    • SLR60 Tape Drive
    • SLR100 Tape Drive
    • Half-High LTO-2 Tape Drive

    The 7212 Model 103 has two bays designed to accommodate up to two tape or DVD optical storage drives. The initial order of the 7212 Model 103 must include at least one of the following drive features:

    VXA-2 Tape Drive (#1104) — This tape drive feature for the 7212 Model 103 provides an excellent migration path for IBM System p and IBM System i server users from the 4-mm tape drive. It can also be a cost effective solution for save, restore, and archiving functions. The tape drive is designed to provide a media physical capacity of up to 80 GB (160 GB with 2:1 compression) physical data storage capacity per cartridge.

    DAT72 (DDS Gen5) Tape Drive (#1105) — This feature is a SCSI streaming tape drive for IBM System p servers. It provides an excellent migration and interchange path from other 4mm technology tape drives, and is designed to provide a solution for save, restore, and archiving functions. This tape drive provides physical storage capacity of 36 GB (72 GB with 2:1 compression) per data cartridge, and is designed to achieve a sustained data rate of up to 3 MB per second (native). It is designed to provide read/write compatibility with DDS-4 and DDS-3 formats.

    SLR60 Tape Drive (#1107) — For IBM System p and IBM System i servers, this QIC format tape drive, with 37.5 GB native data physical capacity per tape cartridge and a native physical data transfer rate of up to 4 MB per second, uses 2:1 compression to achieve a single tape cartridge physical capacity up to 75 GB of data. The SLR60 tape drive is designed to be read and write compatible with SLR100 (5 GB, 30 GB, and 37.5 GB only), MLR3, and MLR1 QIC tape formats, and is read-compatible with all QIC-4GB (SLR5) and QIC-2GB tape formats. It is also designed to be read-only compatible with MLR1, SLR5, and DC9250 QIC formats.

    SLR100 Tape Drive (#1108) — For IBM System p and IBM System i servers, this QIC format tape drive, with 50 GB native data physical capacity per tape cartridge and a native physical data transfer rate of up to 5 MB per second, uses 2:1 compression to achieve single tape cartridge storage of up to 100 GB of data. In addition to being designed to read and write on SLR60 and SLR100 tape cartridges, it is also designed to read and write on MLR3 QIC formats and be read-compatible with MLR1 and QIC-4GB (SLR5) QIC tape formats.

    Half-High LTO-2 Tape Drive (#1109) — For IBM System p and IBM System i servers, the Half-High LTO-2 Tape Drive is designed to provide media physical capacity of up to 200 GB (400 GB with 2:1 compression) data storage per Ultrium 2 cartridge and a sustained data transfer rate of 24.0 MB per second (48 MB per second with 2:1 compression). In addition to reading and writing on Ultrium 2 tape cartridges, it is also read and write compatible with Ultrium 1 cartridges. The Half-High LTO-2 Tape Drive can be a cost-effective solution for save, restore, and archiving functions.

    VXA-320 Tape Drive (#1114) — This tape drive feature provides an excellent migration path for IBM System p and IBM System i server users, from the 4-mm tape drive and VXA-2, and can be a cost-effective solution for save, restore, and archiving functions. The tape drive is designed to provide a media physical capacity of up to 160 GB (320 GB with 2:1 compression) physical data storage capacity per cartridge.

    Note: Although the above tape drive features can give you high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. In addition, the compression technology is designed to double the amount of data that can be stored on the media, although the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data that is being compressed.

    DVD-RAM 2 drive (#1103) — The flexibility and compatibility offered in the new 7212 DVD-RAM 2 feature makes it an excellent solution for your DVD-RAM read and write requirements. The DVD-RAM 2 drive can read and write on 4.7 GB and 9.4 GB DVD-RAM media. The DVD-RAM 2 uses only bare media, which reduces media costs, and is also read compatible with multisession CD, CD-RW, and 2.6 GB and 5.2 GB DVD-RAM media. The 9.4 GB physical capacity of DVD-RAM allows storage of more data than on conventional CD-RW or CD-recordable media. Fast performance also allows quick access to information, while downward compatibility helps provide investment protection.

     

    Note: Disc capacity options are 2.6 GB and 4.7 GB per side. The 5.2 GB and 9.4 GB capacities can be achieved by using double-sided DVD-RAM discs.

    Key application areas include access to any information widely distributed via DVD-RAMs and CD-ROMs, such as licensed software, software updates, and user and technical manuals and documentation. Many other multimedia applications are also well suited for capture and distribution on CD-ROMs. The multisession capability is designed to support photo CD applications.

    Business Partners can enjoy the convenience of distributing their software on economically-priced DVD-RAM media. Using both sides of the disk, up to 9.4 GB can be stored on a single disk, and unlike tape-based media, there is no deterioration of data regardless of the number of plays.

    This variable speed DVD-RAM drive attaches to the host server via a SCSI cable to a variety of Fast/Narrow, or Fast/Wide adapters. The DVD-RAM drive has the following characteristics:

    • Uses bare DVD media only
    • Has a maximum data rate of up to 2.77 MB per second maximum data rate (DVD-RAM, read)
    • 165 ms average test random access (DVD), 125 ms average access (CD-ROM and CD-RW)
    • A DVD-RAM write physical capacity of up to 4.7 GB
    • DVD-RAM read capacities of up to 2.6 GB, 4.7 GB, 5.2 GB, and 9.4 GB
    • A loading tray that supports 12 cm and 8 cm disks (8 cm, horizontal only)
    • Support of asynchronous and synchronous data transfer
    • Comes packaged in a 5.25-inch, half-high form factor

    Support for industry standards is built into this feature. These include:

    • Multi-media compliance (MPC-3)
    • CD-DA Digital Audio standard Red Book audio
    • The ability to read CD-ROM media in Modes 1 or 2, XA, CDDA, and audio formats
    • The ability to read multisession discs, CD-recordable discs, and CD-RW discs
