Installing GX RIO-2/HSL-2 adapters and GX 12x channel adapters in an 8203-E4A, 8204-E8A, 8261-E4S, 9408-M25, or 9409-M50 with power off

Learn about installing GX RIO-2/HSL-2 adapters and GX 12x channel adapters in an 8203-E4A, 8204-E8A, 8261-E4S, 9408-M25, or 9409-M50 server with power off.

Note: Installing this feature is a customer task. You can perform this task yourself, or contact a service provider to perform the task for you. You might be charged a fee by the service provider for this service.

To install an adapter, complete the following steps:

    1. Complete the prerequisite tasks described in Before you begin.
    2. Stop the system, as described in Stopping the system or logical partition.
    3. On a rack-mounted system unit, open the back rack door.
    4. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system.
Note: This system can be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.
    5. If necessary, disconnect any cables connected to the adapter at the back of the system.
    6. If you are working on a rack-mounted system unit, place the system in the service position as described in Placing a rack-mounted model 8203-E4A, 8204-E8A, 9407-M15, 9408-M25, or 9409-M50 in the service position.
    7. Remove the access cover:
    8. Locate the appropriate slot in which to install the GX adapter:
      • For model 8203-E4A, 8261-E4S, or 9408-M25 with processor feature code 5634, choose slot P1-C8 as shown in Figure 2.
Note: If you are unsure about which processor feature you have, look at your system and refer to Figure 2. If a processor is located in P1-P6#1 only, you have processor feature 5634. If processors are located in both P1-P6#1 and P1-P6#2, you have processor feature 5635.
      • For model 8203-E4A or , 8261-E4S with processor feature code 5635, choose slot P1-C6 for the first adapter as shown in Figure 3. If you are installing a second adapter, choose slot P1-C1/P1-C8 as shown in Figure 2.
Restriction: If you are installing an adapter in slot P1-C1/P1-C8 and that slot contains a PCI adapter, relocate the PCI adapter to another slot. For information about how to relocate a PCI adapter, see Managing PCI adapters.
      • For model 8204-E8A or 9409-M50, if there is only one processor card in the system, choose slot P1-C8 as shown in Figure 1. If two processor cards are installed, P1-C7 will also support a GX adapter.
        Restriction:

        • Two GX adapters are supported only if two processor cards are in the system.
        • If you are installing a GX RIO-2/HSL-2 adapter and a 12x channel adapter, install the 12x channel adapter in slot P1-C7.
        • For model 8204-E8A or 9409-M50, any combination of feature code 5614 GX RIO-2/HSL-2 adapters and feature code 5616 GX 12x channel adapters can be installed for a maximum of two GX adapters. To use the feature code 5609 adapter, the system must have two or more processor cards installed and the 5609 GX 12x channel adapter must be installed in slot P1–C7.

    9. Attach the wrist strap.
      Attention:

      • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
      • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
      • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
    10. If necessary, release the catch and slide the retainer up and then to the right.
    11. Carefully grasp the new adapter assembly by its top edge and align the adapter assembly with the slot and its connector on the system backplane.
    12. Press the adapter assembly firmly into its connector.
Attention: When you install an adapter into the system, be sure that it is completely and correctly seated in its connector.
    13. Seat the adapter, as appropriate for your model.
      • For model 8203-E4A, 8261-E4S, or 9408-M25, see Figure 4. Push down evenly on both of the blue locking latches (A) at the same time until the latches snap into place, indicating that the adapter assembly is seated correctly and locked into position. Slide the retainer to the left (B) and then push down to close (C) the retainer.
Note: Some adapters may be seated with the same instructions as seen in Figure 5.
      • For model 8204-E8A or 9409-M50, see Figure 5 or Figure 6. Push down evenly on both of the blue locking latches (A) at the same time until the latches snap into place, indicating that the adapter assembly is seated correctly and locked into position. Slide the retainers (B) into the closed position.

    15. Swing the cable retention bracket towards the chassis and push the bracket fastener (B) into the chassis opening to secure the bracket.
    16. Replace the service access cover:
    17. If you are working on a rack-mounted system unit, ensure that the system cables are routed through the cable-management arm correctly.
    18. If you are working on a rack-mounted system unit, place the system in the operating position as described in Placing a rack-mounted model 8203-E4A, 8204-E8A, 8261-E4S, 9407-M15, 9408-M25, or 9409-M50 or 8261-E4S in the operating position.
    19. Reconnect all power and signal cables to their respective connectors. Ensure that the GX adapter cables (C), shown in Figure 7, are routed through the appropriate cable retention brackets to prevent excessive cable movement.
    20. Close the back rack door or the back system door.
    21. Start the system, as described in Starting the system or logical partition.
